Walkabout:
Parque
del Retiro
(Retirement
Park),
Madrid is the most popular and widely
visited park in Madrid, approximately 350 acres. Situated behind the
Prado museum, right at the city’s main tourist attractions. It is a magnificent place for a stroll. It presents an annual book fair, and
there are concerts throughout the summer. Home to monuments,
sculptures and a boating lake.
“Estanque”
is the heart of Retiro, is the boating lake.
In
the 17th
century only the royal family was allowed to use it, and Retiro as a
whole is privately, hosting pageantry, mock naval battles and bull
fights. Only a century later did it open to the public, even then
visitors had to dress formally to enter.
El Retiro as a place to be, especially summer time.
