Conversation with Barrister Dele Kuboye, President of The Dele Kuboye Group

Barrister Dele Kuboye at a social occasion

Who is your role model and why?
My role model is the distinguished Senator Dr. Bode Olajumoke, Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2007/11. He is my role model because he is a rich, kind, humble man and philanthropist.

We know that you're a successful lawyer and a community leader; who and what inspired you?
What inspired me to success in my chosen career is my desire to contribute my little quota to the development of my country and to be able to help my fellow man.

What is success to you, and how do you go about it?
To me, a man is successful if he is content with whatever he has achieved in life and able to give back to the society from his sweat.

When have you been most satisfied in your life?
I was satisfied the day I was called to the Nigerian Barr and admitted to practice as barrister, solicitor and advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Please tell us what  you have done so far and what are your plans for the future?
I have been very successful in courtroom practice of law, with particular interest in criminal defense. My future plan is to combine courtroom practice with my boardroom duties while managing my little establishments.

Tell us about a time when things didn't go the way you wanted (like a promotion you wanted and didn't get, or a project that didn't turn out how you had wanted it?
Things didn't go the way I wanted when I was growing up as a result of the separation of my parents very early in my life, from age one or so. It was very difficult as my upbringing eventually changed from house to house and family to family!

What is your advice to the authorities in Africa in terms of security and corruption?
My advice to authorities in Africa in relation to corruption is that high profile corrupt practices should be legislated to attract a death penalty. About insecurity, authorities should do a lot more and to seek help, cooperation and partnership from both local and international organizations in order to fight the menace of insecurity in all its ramifications.

Tell us about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant to you?
My major accomplishment is the establishment of the Dele Kuboye Group with various medium scale investments like: Dele Kuboye Solicitors, Dele Kuboye Supermarket, Dele Kuboye Carwash, Dele Kuboye Bricks and Blocks, Dele Kuboye Poultry Farms etc.

If you were given a contract, loved everything about it, and are paid what you asked for; what kind of offer from another institution would make you change your mind?
No amount of offers or inducement can make me change my mind in respect of a done-deal in which I have stuck my name/reputation! Integrity comes first and other things will follow in any business, contract etc.

What won't you do?
I won't steal from anybody, any government establishment etc
For few readers that don’t know you, what would you like them to know about you and to always remember you for?
I will like to be remembered as complete honest man.
